VA Honors Performance Excellence Award Winners

The Secretary of Veterans Affairs selected the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center to receive the 2011 Robert W. Carey Excellence Award. The award recognizes the facility’s commitment to the Veterans it serves. The award ceremony was held on December 9, 2011 in Washington, DC. The Honorable Raul Perea-Henze, MD, Assistant Secretary for Policy and Planning, provided the keynote address at the awards ceremony.

The Secretary’s Robert W. Carey Performance Excellence Awards were established to recognize organizations with exemplary approaches to systems management that achieve excellent results for America’s Veterans. The foundation for the awards is the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence. The Baldrige Criteria are designed to help organizations use an integrated approach to organizational performance management that results in: delivery of ever-improving value to customers and stakeholders, contributing to organizational stability; improvement of overall effectiveness and capabilities; and organizational and personal learning.

The Carey Awards, presented annually since 1992, are named for the former Director of the VA Regional Office and Insurance Center in Philadelphia, who passed away in 1990. Mr. Carey led his office in initiating a total-quality management approach to serving Veterans and their families.
